Demining Ukraine

Approximately 30% of Ukraine’s territory has been exposed to combat operations. This area needs survey and clearance from vast amounts of landmines and other explosive ordnance.

30% - that’s approximately 174 000 sq.km (roughly the size of England and Wales combined) littered with explosives, potentially lethal to children playing, farmers farming the land or rescue workers trying to save lives.

At current pace, with current methods, clearing this vast area of explosives will take over 750 years. Clearly, we need to speed things up!

Landmines are not only slow and tedious to demine, they are also extremely dangerous to the deminers. In Ukraine, EOD personnel are killed each week by mines.

Clearly, we need better, safer solutions!

DEMINE Foundation’s goal is to create a drone-based landmine detection and disposal solution.

We are developing a solution consisting of

  • inexpensive, off-the-shelf commercially available drones

  • equipped with inexpensive, off-the-shelf commercially available sensors and

  • an inexpensive, off-the-shelf computer with Artificial Intelligence image recognition software.

The drone itself detects, classifies and maps the landmines and other unexploded devices and can communicate this information to anyone who needs the information in near real-time.
